      Japanese Fairy Tales

This volume of thirteen Japanese fairy tales is a collection drawn from Juliet Piggott's memories of stories told to her during her childhood in Japan and, as an adult, her study of Japanese folklore. They are ancient stories, some of them set in the age of pre-history and myth and all of them evoking the delicate Japanese customs and countryside which remain unchanged by time.

Some of these stories are old favourites while others are less familiar, but all combine events and characters with the magic which is the essence of any fairy tale. Yet the flavour of the stories is essentially Japanese and whereas some are sad, others have humour and all retain the charm and excite- ment of the original tales.
